Transient fluid flow

The water (or steam) hammer is the pressure vibration in mass of liquid or or dense vapor that produces the dynamic differential pressure along pipes. The dynamic forces resulting from these differential pressures may conduce to great deformations and stresses on the pipe structure, which can collapse. This phenomena can occur when a suddenly perturbation of the pressure appear and this happened on valves closure, pump trip, pipe rupture, etc. The vapor cavitation is another unpleasant phenomenon, which occurs when the liquid pressure falls below vaporization pressure at a fixed temperature. These phenomena involve the occurrence of unstable vapor pockets in liquid mass, which influence the flow parameter and induce the violent vibrations. Also, these pockets induce a rapid local deterioration of pipe material.
